Solar in Wisconsin: Yes – Solar PV is working in Wisconsin right now. We have better sunlight conditions than Germany, which is currently leading the world with Solar PV Installs.

Yes. Solar is working in Wisconsin! Solar is more popular in California and Arizona because they have more sunlight, but Wisconsin has a couple things working in its favor:

  • Regular rainfall patterns in Wisconsin clean the solar modules naturally. In CA and AZ there are companies who offer a “Solar Panel Cleaning Service” because the dust builds up on them reducing electricity production.
  • It is cooler in Wisconsin. PV (and electricity in general) has a reverse temperature coefficient, which means that the colder it is the more efficient it is. The heat of southern states reduces the efficiency of their solar panels.
  • The snowfall will reduce electrical production, but not nearly as bad as one might think. Our solar arrays are designed in such a way (ground mount or roof top) to minimize snow shading.

US and German Solar Resource for Photovoltaics / Normal Solar Radiation (kWh/kW-yr)

The above map illustrates the average solar radiation for the United States and Germany. Germany is the world leader in solar electricity production and they clearly have less solar power per square meter than Wisconsin does. In fact, they are much closer to Alaska’s solar radiation than Wisconsin’s.
